First Friday at 1026, Vox and Tiger

The show Yesterday Today is Tomorrow at Space 1026, if described in one word, is quaint. This is not necessarily an unfavorable assessment. The artists are certainly intentional in a way which is playful and aloof, and I find that quaint.

I heard a while back from my buddy Julie Karabenick, a painter of geometrical abstractions and founder of the influential web site, Geoform.   On the site, Julie has a bunch of great q&a’s with artists, which are wonderful to read and illustrated with many, many pictures.

First Friday three-ring circus at Jolie Laide

The show at Jolie Laide on First Friday included the slick, decorative surfaces of Robert Horvath in the main space, in the alley the funky DIY installation by Tim Eads, and in the project space the mechanical torture rack of Heather Ramsdale.

Episode 4 next Monday features Curators Bob Cozzolino of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Sid Sachs of Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery in a heady discussion about public art.  In the short sample below, hear Sid opine that money should not be spent just to spend money because it spawns a lot of bad art.

What makes an artist’s vision so clear to himself early in life?  The current exhibition of Yves Klein’s works at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington poses an answer by shedding light on the work of an artist whose work and manner is difficult to understand out of context.
