I attended the opening of No Longer Empty next to the Chelsea Hotel in New York last thursday night. I was greeted by an enthusiastic Manon Slome, former head curator at Chelsea Art Museum. She and others have started a great organization that provides exhibition space in abandoned storefronts in New York City (see http://www.nolongerempty.com/).

Manon was nice enough to personally escort me through the whole exhibition. One of the storefronts was a fish and tackle shop. One can still see the pegboard on the walls that are now perfectly suitable for an art installation. Manon says it is a lot of work to prep the stores that are usually trashed when they find them. No Longer Empty helps the landlords of these spaces by revitalizing and cleaning them up. Plus, the art is a perfect way to attract new tenants after the shows close in a month.
